There is no conclusive body of evidence to confirm the idea that such genetic characteristics are passed down through generations (in fact, there is considerable scientific opposition to this view). Nonetheless, it is argued that because of this breeding, highly Understanding ‘Race’ and Sport 11 specialised features involving physical prowess became dominant in this black population group. Again, the validity of this view is less significant than its place in the popular imagination. Entine’s book devotes less space to an analysis of the social and cultural factors which act as barriers to progress in sport and other spheres; and to acknowledging the dangers of an analysis based on a fairly limited repertoire of sports.

In addition, there is evidence of biased umpiring decisions based more on stereotyped ideas about Asians, than the actual rules of the game; excessive bureaucracy institutionalising the segregation of Asian clubs from official leagues; and ‘nagging’ feelings by Asian players of antipathy towards them when joining white clubs.
