7 a bloody 15 m in the morning. There is one very practical consequence to this. We almost never have visiting Rotarians. If a Rotarian wants to visit another club, always an experience, getting up for a 7:15 breakfast usually isn’t high on the list. Even our guest speakers groan when it sinks in that the 7:15 presentation they’ve agreed to give isn’t PM. But one of the amusing and lovable quirks about my Rotary club is that we always have one visiting Rotarian. Every week. Rain or shine. Stan, the aforementioned retired bowling alley contractor, is 87, and most mornings sharper than I am at half his age.

Even if it’s just us, we still introduce Stan. And he always takes his opportunity to say a few graceful or amusing words. ” Stan will slowly stand and say something witty such as, “Glad to be alive,” and then sit back down. It’s a wonderful ritual. This morning I don’t even remember if we introduced Stan or not. It didn’t seem to matter. Our eyes stayed glued to images of billowing smoke around the Twin Towers on CNN on the television sets in the meeting room at the Sharp Park Golf Course. We never use these TVs.

Of course Rotary Clubs are always holding fundraisers to help pay for these good deeds; Spaghetti Dinners, Bowl-a-Thons, Theatre Nights and more. Some business people join Rotary because they think it will help their business. They’re misguided. Poor souls. Rotarians who are in for that reason don’t stay long. While it may help your business in some small way, that’s not the point. If you want to be cold about it and crunch the numbers, it’s not worth the time investment. Rotary is about intelligent civic minded community leaders who want to make their home a better place to live.
