Semi-automatic sniper rifles were complex and time-consuming to manufacture to sniper standards, as all parts had to be blueprint-perfect and hand-fitted. The M1-C was regarded as practical for sniping out to 700yds (640m) only, but using armourpiercing (AP) ammunition with its heavier bullet improved performance considerably.

Elsewhere around the world, the situation was little better. Germany was forced to severely limit the size of its army and only a tiny proportion of sniping rifles remained in military hands; probably more were kept in private houses by returning soldiers than were ever returned to their armouries. Most French Lebel and Berthier rifles that had been scoped were also stripped of their optical sights then sold off to African colonies. com 39 A P14 rifle with Aldis scope.
